Background
In Japan, a lot of high school students and junior high school students go to private tutoring schools to pass their entrance exams. They need to sacrifice most of the time for study. This is very tough, stressful and competitive term. That's why Japanese people call it "examination war" and students immediately stop studying after entering universities.
My challenge
I looked back of my examination war and thought the reason they stop studying is that they cannot imagine their life will be more joyful thanks to study. Study and my real life was completely divided. Students and teachers were also divided. Teachers were always teaching and students were always being taught. I wanted to show students that adults are accompanists because there are many adults who keep learning to enjoy their lives. Also I wanted to show adults that there is no time limit to start learning new things. That's why the combination of these opposite two things is meaningful because study and art share the most important mission that make your live colorful.
Redesign of private tutoring school
The private tutoring school "Dogo Shintaku zemi" had vacancies in upstairs . I decided to make workshop space on 3rd floor, and art space on 4th floor.
Workshop space : 3rd floor
This is open space that anyone can bring their own unique workshop. My friend and I had kimono classes regularly. It was a good mach because the building is located in the center of tourist site of hot spring.
Art space : 4th floor
This room was abandoned because of the trouble with construction company. I decided to use it as an art space. It has been used for art event place, photo shooting spot and wall calligraphy.
